The Brainport Eindhoven Ecosystem: A Guide for Engineers
Brainport Eindhoven is consistently ranked as one of the top three most innovative regions in the world. With around 4,500 technology companies and a GDP per capita that rivals Amsterdam, it punches far above its size. For engineers, it is one of the best places in Europe to build a deep technical career. But the ecosystem is also layered and complex — understanding who does what, and where you fit, takes time.
The anchor companies
A handful of large organisations define the character of Brainport and create the gravitational pull that attracts thousands of smaller companies and suppliers.
ASML (Veldhoven) — ~16,000 employees in the Netherlands; builds EUV and DUV lithography systems; the single most impactful technology company in the region
NXP Semiconductors (Eindhoven) — ~11,000 employees globally; automotive and industrial chips; headquarters and major R&D in Eindhoven

Many of the most interesting engineering jobs in Brainport are not at the anchor companies but at their suppliers — engineering service providers and high-tech manufacturing companies that develop and produce subsystems, modules, and components.
VDL Groep (Eindhoven) — high-tech systems, automotive, and mechatronics; major ASML supplier and employer of thousands of engineers
Sioux Technologies (Eindhoven) — software, mechatronics, and mathematics for high-tech OEMs; known for engineering quality and career development
Prodrive Technologies (Son en Breugel) — power electronics, mechatronics, and software; builds complete systems for ASML, medical, and energy markets
Demcon (Eindhoven/Enschede) — high-tech systems and products from concept to production; strong in medical devices and semiconductor equipment

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) — one of Europe's top technical universities; strong in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and industrial design
TNO (Eindhoven/Delft) — the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research; bridges academic research and industrial application in photonics, semiconductor, and ICT

Navigating a career in Brainport
Many engineers start at a supplier (Sioux, Prodrive, Demcon) because these companies offer broad project exposure early in a career — you might work on four different programmes for four different OEMs in two years. After building domain depth, many move to an OEM (ASML, NXP) for programme stability and specialisation. Others stay in the supply chain and build deep application expertise. Neither path is wrong; both are well compensated and technically challenging.
