The Netherlands has a globally unique combination of world-class photonics expertise (built on decades of ASML and Philips optics R&D) and a rapidly expanding startup ecosystem. If you have an optical or photonics background, you are in one of the best labour market positions in the country.
Why the Netherlands leads in photonics
ASML's EUV lithography machines are the most optically precise instruments ever built for industrial use โ and that capability did not emerge from nowhere. It was built over 40 years by optical physicists, engineers, and manufacturing specialists, many of whom came from Philips. That concentration of expertise, combined with Eindhoven University of Technology's photonics research programmes and TNO's applied optics group, has made the Netherlands one of the top three photonics ecosystems in Europe.

Optical Design Engineer โ designing and tolerancing optical systems; Zemax/CODE V required
Photonics Integration Engineer โ combining optical components and subsystems into working devices
PIC (Photonic Integrated Circuit) Designer โ designing waveguides, modulators, and detectors on chip; silicon photonics or III-V
Optical Test & Characterisation Engineer โ building test benches, characterising optical components and assemblies
Laser Systems Engineer โ laser source design and integration for lithography, sensing, or medical applications
