Kaizen — Continuous Improvement Events

Kaizen (Japanese for "change for good") is the practice of making small, continuous improvements involving all employees. In manufacturing, it is often implemented as structured kaizen events (also called kaizen blitzes or rapid improvement events) — focused 3–5 day workshops targeting a specific process problem.

Why companies use it

Real engineering example

A five-day kaizen event targeting the changeover process of a semiconductor substrate inspection machine reduced changeover time from 4.2 hours to 47 minutes. The team (operators, maintenance, process engineer) identified that 68% of changeover time was searching for the correct setup fixtures, which were stored in unlabelled bins. Shadow boards, colour-coded fixtures, and a standardised changeover sequence sheet were created during the event. OEE on that machine improved from 62% to 78% in the following quarter.
