Lean Manufacturing
Lean is a manufacturing philosophy derived from the Toyota Production System (TPS) that focuses on eliminating waste (muda) in all its forms to deliver maximum value to the customer. It defines eight types of waste and provides a toolkit of methods to identify and remove them.
Why companies use it
- ·Reduces lead time and inventory, freeing up working capital and improving responsiveness
- ·Increases throughput without adding headcount or capital equipment
- ·Improves quality by identifying and eliminating defect-producing process steps
- ·Creates a culture of problem-solving and continuous improvement at every level of the organisation

- ·Lean thinking is the baseline expectation in any manufacturing or operations engineering role
- ·They want engineers who have actually implemented lean improvements, not just attended a training course
- ·Understanding the eight wastes (TIMWOODS / DOWNTIME) and being able to identify them in a real process shows practical knowledge
- ·Experience facilitating kaizen events or value stream mapping workshops signals leadership capability
Typical interview questions
Name the eight wastes of lean manufacturing and give an example of each from a workplace you know.
What is the difference between value-added and non-value-added activities? Give examples from a manufacturing process.
Describe a lean improvement you have implemented. What was the before and after state?
How does lean relate to quality — can you improve quality by reducing waste?
What is the difference between push and pull manufacturing, and why does lean prefer pull?
Common mistakes
- ·Implementing lean tools (5S, kanban boards) without understanding the underlying principles — tools without thinking are cosmetic
- ·Focusing only on the shop floor — significant waste also exists in office processes, engineering change processes, and supply chains
- ·Ignoring the people element — lean requires psychological safety for operators to raise problems without fear
- ·Treating lean as a one-time project rather than a permanent management system and culture
- ·Confusing lean (waste elimination) with cost-cutting — reducing headcount is not lean
