What hiring managers look for
Quality management system experience: ISO 9001, IATF 16949 (automotive), ISO 13485 (medical), or AS9100 (aerospace) — name the standard and what you produced under it
FMEA and control plan ownership: design FMEA, process FMEA, and the link between risk identification and control measures
Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Measurement System Analysis (MSA): applying these in a production environment, not just knowing the theory
Root cause analysis and CAPA: 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone — leading structured investigations through to verified closure
Supplier quality management: qualification audits, first article inspection (FAI/PPAP), and managing non-conformances with external suppliers
Non-conformance and change management: NCR handling, corrective and preventive actions, and engineering change control in a regulated environment
Don't forget to mention
Quality management systems you have worked under and your specific role: implementer, auditor, or system owner
FMEA types you have led: Design FMEA, Process FMEA, and whether you used AIAG-VDA methodology
Measurement system analysis: gauge R&R studies and how findings fed into your control plans
Supplier qualification process: audit, FAI, PPAP — and whether you have issued or resolved supplier NCRs
Customer-facing quality experience: handling complaints, 8D reports issued to customers, or attendance at customer audits
Non-conformance management: from detection through root cause, containment, correction, and verified closure
Quality tools: SPC charts, Pareto analysis, control plans, and how you used data to prioritise action
Common interview mistakes
Listing quality standards without describing what you actually produced — a quality plan, FMEA, PPAP package, or audit report
Confusing quality assurance with quality control — show you work upstream, not just at the inspection gate
No metrics: defect escape rate, first pass yield, supplier PPM, audit findings closed on time — these are the language of quality management
Not showing how your quality work influenced product or process design — purely reactive quality experience is less valued
Omitting the product domain: automotive, semiconductor, medical, and aerospace have different standards and expectations

Quality Engineers are hired for their judgement under pressure. Prepare a story about a time you stopped a shipment or escalated a risk — and what happened next.
Lead with a quality outcome: "reduced customer escapes by 60% through redesigned outgoing inspection process" — not just responsibilities
Show your upstream contribution: FMEAs you led during design, supplier audits before qualification, process capability studies before launch
Pair certifications (ISO Lead Auditor, CQE) with the outcomes they enabled — a certificate without a delivered result carries little weight
For high-tech roles in Brainport, emphasise experience with complex engineered products (not just process industry) and statistical rigour
If you have successfully closed a major customer audit or resolved a customer quality escalation, make that a centrepiece story
