What hiring managers look for

Quality management system experience: ISO 9001, IATF 16949 (automotive), ISO 13485 (medical), or AS9100 (aerospace) — name the standard and what you produced under it

FMEA and control plan ownership: design FMEA, process FMEA, and the link between risk identification and control measures

Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Measurement System Analysis (MSA): applying these in a production environment, not just knowing the theory

Root cause analysis and CAPA: 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone — leading structured investigations through to verified closure

Supplier quality management: qualification audits, first article inspection (FAI/PPAP), and managing non-conformances with external suppliers

Common interview mistakes

Listing quality standards without describing what you actually produced — a quality plan, FMEA, PPAP package, or audit report

Confusing quality assurance with quality control — show you work upstream, not just at the inspection gate

No metrics: defect escape rate, first pass yield, supplier PPM, audit findings closed on time — these are the language of quality management

Not showing how your quality work influenced product or process design — purely reactive quality experience is less valued

Omitting the product domain: automotive, semiconductor, medical, and aerospace have different standards and expectations

Pair certifications (ISO Lead Auditor, CQE) with the outcomes they enabled — a certificate without a delivered result carries little weight

Use the STAR method to structure your answers: Situation → Challenge → Action → Result.

Situation

A recurring field complaint from a key customer pointed to dimensional variation in an assembled sub-component — but the part had been passing outgoing inspection.

Challenge

The existing inspection method had an undetected measurement error, meaning a systematic defect had been escaping undetected for months.

Action

Initiated an MSA study that revealed a gauge R&R of 38% — well above the 10% threshold. Replaced the measurement method, redefined the control plan, and led an 8D with the production and supplier teams to address the root cause in the process.

Result
